Man in ‘ice’ case gets 6 mos. term
The federal court sentenced yesterday to six months in prison a man who was among three charged with conspiring to sell methamphetamine or “ice” in December 2007.
U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Alex Munson imposed a six-month term on Lawrence Sablan Kalen for one count of distribution and possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.
Munson gave Kalen credit for the time he has already served in jail and ordered that the balance of his imprisonment shall be served by house arrest.
This means that the defendant will be placed on house arrest for 138 days under the supervision of the U.S. Probation Office. Kalen will also be placed on three years of supervised release.
Munson ordered the defendant to perform 200 hours of community service and pay a $100 special assessment fee.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Eric O’Malley recommended six months imprisonment, a credit for the time already served in jail, and three years of supervised release.
O’Malley also recommended that the remainder of the jail term be served by house arrest with conditions that would allow the defendant to continue his employment.
Defense attorney Bruce Berline agreed with the recommendation.
Lawrence Kalen, Manuel Aldan Sablan, and Greggory Kalen were indicted with one count of conspiracy to distribute “ice” and two counts of distribution and possession with intent to distribute “ice.”
According to the indictment, the three conspired to distribute “ice” on Dec. 1, 2007 and on Dec. 13, 2007.
The three defendants entered a plea agreement with the U.S. government and pleaded guilty.
