Tudela to ask for more funds for animal shelter
Saipan Mayor Juan B. Tudela will ask the Legislature to allocate more money for the stalled animal shelter project following complaints about the dangers posed by stray dogs.
An initial fund of $75,000 had already been appropriated two years ago but the project was not implemented because the money was not enough, according to estimates from the contractors who participated in the bidding.
The Mayor explained that the lowest bid submitted amounted to $120,000 while the highest was $150,000.
Tudela asked the Legislature in April last year for an additional $75,000 but there has been no response.
He said this initial funding that had already been appropriated is due in the Mayor’s account.
He said he will make another attempt for the Legislature to grant the request for that fund.
The animal shelter project is intended to build examination rooms, quarantine rooms and other facilities.
Tudela said the quarantine is to make sure that sick dogs and healthy dogs are separated from each other.
“We want to finish the project but how can we do it if we lack funding,” he said.
Stray dogs had been a serious problem on Saipan.
Tudela had been looking at an area in Kagman as the most appropriate site for an animal shelter.
Tudela said he wants to finish the project before he leaves office next year, following the general elections in November this year.
