Rep. Joseph Camacho has proposed a bill requiring government officials to take an annual ethic tests.

“The Legislature finds that many public officials, especially the newly elected officials must be educated on the Commonwealth Government Ethics code. Although the office of the Public Auditor has conducted many training sessions on the Government Ethics Code throughout the years, attendance at such ethics training sessions has been voluntary on the part of public officials,” the bill states.

Camacho notes that the number government corruption cases has increased in recent years, “which in part may be a clear indication of the lack of knowledge and understanding of the Government Ethics Code among public officials.”

Under the proposed legislation, each public official must pay $100 of his or her own money for the program fee. The OPA will publish the results annually in one of the Commonwealth’s newspapers. The program would start this year.
