Percy, Yho top January roll-offs
Veteran keglers Percy Omechalang and Yho Villavicencio kicked off the Year of the Ox in style, winning the January Budweiser King and Queen of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament last Monday at the Saipan Bowling Center.
Omechalang leapfrogged past first day leader Raymond Zapanta with an eye-popping four-game series of 859, good for a 214.75 average.
He started out with a roll of 196 before catching fire with a 215 in the second game. He came back to earth with a pedestrian 189 in the third game, but more than made that up with a swashbuckling 259 performance in the fourth and final game.
Zapanta settled for runner-up honors after his 793 total and 198.25 average on Sunday was eclipsed by Omechalang. The IT&E employee bucked a slow start that saw him fire 177 and 156 in the first two games, only to explode with 247 and 213 in the final two.
Simon Manacop was third for the January tilt after his four-game series of 194, 170, 167, and 230 allowed him to end up with a 190.25 average.
Omechalang took home $100 for his feat in 2009’s first monthly tournament by the Saipan Bowling Association, while Zapanta and Manacop earned $50 and $30, respectively.
Southpaw Richard Leong also made it to the money list with his 754 and 188.5 numbers and pocketed $15 for his troubles.
Villavicencio, meanwhile, edged Day 1 leader Linda Yarobwemal after tattooing 727 pins on Monday.
She started off on the right foot, downing 218 pins in the first before coming up with so-so rolls of 149, 184, and 176 in the final three.
Villavicencio’s total was 11 pins more than what Yarobwemal rolled on Sunday, which saw her string together a series of 133, 148, 241, and 194—good for a 716 total and 179 average.
Ron Cal wound up third when her four-game series of 195, 163, 141, and 206 gave her a total of 705 and 176.25 average.
Villavicencio, Yarobwemal, and Cal were $65, $35, and $20 richer respectively after the tournament.
The January King and Queen of the Lanes drew a total of 44 entries—23 men and 21 women. It was organized by SBA and sponsored by MARPAC.
Last Sunday, Raphael Zapanta won the year’s first Bing Prince of the Lanes after knocking down 700 pins—175 average. He beat seven other youth bowlers.
