Calvo lifts Lady Knights to first win
Mt. Carmel School broke into the win column in the girls varsity division of the 2008-2009 MISO Basketball League after edging Saipan Southern High School, 59-56, Friday night at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
The Lady Knights dropped their first two matches before gaining their first victory after a three-point win over the Lady Rays, who now have a 0-3 record.
Noelle Calvo exploded for a season-high 45 points to lead the Lady Knights to victory.
She was the lone Mt. Carmel player to score in the second half, helping the Knights halt the Rays’ rally and preserve the win.
Calvo earned a living from the 15-foot line, going 10-for-13 from the foul line in the fourth quarter alone. She fired 16 points in the final canto against the 23 points of the entire Southern crew.
Calvo and Nicole Lebria made six points apiece in the first quarter, giving the Lady Knights an 18-8 lead. Megan Sablan and Justalyn Camacho contributed four and two markers, respectively.
The burly Calvo continued to bang her way into the shaded lane in the second period, adding eight more points to keep Mt. Carmel in the driver’s seat, 28-19.
The second half was another Calvo show with the member of the CNMI Junior National Women’s Team making all of Mt. Carmel’s 15 points in the third period.
The Lady Knights entered the fourth quarter ahead by double digits, 43-33, and despite the Lady Rays playing their best game offensively in the fourth canto, outscoring the MCS, 23-16, Calvo’s crucial baskets were enough to ensure Mt. Carmel the win.
Meanwhile, the Lady Rays were hoping to enter the win column last night as they collided with Kagman’s Lady Ayuyus.
The Lady Ayuyus have a 2-1 record, behind by only a win against the league-leading MHS Lady Dolphins (3-0).
