Kagman sweeps Southern
Kagman High School proved that its first win against Southern High School was no fluke after cruising to an impressive 65-52 triumph in their second meeting in the 2008-2009 MISO Basketball League Wednesday at the Marianas High School Gymnasium.
In the women’s division, the Lady Ayuyus walloped the Lady Rays, 65-35, for a repeat of the former’s 44-31 win in their first meeting.
Kagman’s boys team defeated the defending champion Rays in the first outing, canning important free throws in the last one minute of the game en route to a close 59-57 victory.
In the second meeting, Kagman made sure the game will be in the bag early in the fourth period.
The Ayuyus were ahead by only three at the end of the third quarter, 43-40, when they stepped on the gas pedal in the fourth, outscoring Southern, 20-12, to improve to a 3-1 record.
Kagman’s lone loss in the league was at the hands of the MHS Dolphins, who are still unbeaten in two games.
Southern remains winless after three matches.
The Rays had only Vince Iglecias making more than a field goal in the first quarter, which ended with Kagman ahead by eight, 19-11.
Southern picked up the scoring in the second period and at the same time tightened up its defense holding Kagman to six points to take the lead at halftime, 27-25.
But the Rays failed to sustain their momentum in the second half losing their chances to enter the win column.
Jimmy Brel paced Kagman with 14 points, while Edwin Camacho and Jesus Iguel chipped in 12 apiece. Trevor Ogumoro nailed 11, making all his points in the second half.
Josh Kiyoshi led Southern’s losing cause firing 18 points, while Iglecias was the only other Ray to score in double figures with 11 markers.
In the women’s division, Mercedes Mesa and Agatha Repeki combined for 38 points to lift the Lady Ayuyus to a 30-point win.
Kagman shut out Southern in the first seven minutes of the game to take a commanding 17-0 lead. The Lady Ayuyus never looked back from thereon, despite Southern’s much improved offensive game in the second half.
Southern was held to three points in the first period and four in the second canto before making 28 points in the second half.
After a hot start, the Lady Ayuyus slowed down in the next three periods, but their big 22-3 after the first quarter was enough to give them their third win in four games.
