‘Rough seas through Friday’
A large storm system east of Japan is expected to generate waves 9-15 feet high through early Friday, forcing the CNMI Emergency Management Office to issue a small craft advisory for hazardous seas yesterday.
Based on the information received from National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled by the local EMO, these swells will begin to enter the local area tonight and become large during the week.
These swells will raise the seas to 9-10 feet tonight and 10-12 feet Tuesday. Today northeast wind 10-15 KT gusts up to 25 KT in the afternoon. Wind waves 4-6 feet east swell 4 feet and north 3 feet. Tonight east wind 15-20 KT with gusts to 30 KT wind waves 6-8 feet mixed swell east 5 feet and northwest 4 feet.
A shear line also cuts across the islands, which means trade winds will freshen and large northwest swells were expected to begin arriving last night and become more northerly later in the week. Combined seas of 9 to 10 feet will build to between 10 and 12 feet Tuesday afternoon.
On Guam and Rota, the high surf advisory will be in effect from 6am Tuesday to 6am Friday along all north and west facing reefs.
On Tinian and Saipan, the high surf advisory will be in effect from 6am today to 6am Friday along north and west facing reefs.
The EMO is strongly advising the public to avoid venturing near reefs and exposed beaches as wind and wave conditions support dangerous rip current. It added that rip current are life threatening to anyone entering the water. (PR)
