Santos, Soriano top 8-ball tourneys
Eric Santos and Jerry Soriano ruled separate Thursday Night 8-Ball Open tournaments held at Round Two Bar and Grill last month.
First to stamp his marks in the 8-ball tilt was Santos, who prevailed over 11 other players in a tournament last Jan. 22.
Santos won his opening match against Joseph Achas and gained his second win after downing Chester Hamoy.
In the next round, Santos defeated Patrick Taitano to advance to the semifinals. Santos gained the first finals ticket after whipping Soriano in the winners’ bracket semis.
Soriano was relegated to the losers’ bracket, but still moved into the finals after outclassing Senen Pangilinan.
In the championship, Santos was given a twice-to-beat advantage for sweeping the preliminaries.
Soriano threatened for an upset when he beat Santos in Game 1, but the latter recovered in Game 2 to secure the championship trophy and the $80 cash prize.
Soriano settled for the $40 runner-up prize.
Other cue artists who participated in the Jan. 22 tournament were Jomer Enriquez, Chester Hamoy, Joey Lucido, Primo Ferrera, Marvin Cabo, Victor Hocog, and Boyet Sequico.
After a runner-up finish in the Jan. 22 tournament, Soriano redeemed himself the following week, besting 15 other participants in the Thursday Night event.
Soriano was paired against Pangilinan in the first round with the former winning.
Soriano’s next victim was Mel Usi and the former topped Patrick Taitano to gain a semis entry against Rolly Villanueva.
In the winners’ bracket semis, Soriano thwarted Villanueva giving the former a twice-to-beat advantage in the finals.
In the losers’ bracket semifinals, Villanueva had to slip past Chester Hamoy to earn a rematch with Soriano.
The rematch produced the same results allowing Soriano to take home the $80 cash prize and a trophy. Villanueva pocketed $50, while Hamoy received $30 for finishing third.
The last Thursday Night tournament for January also featured Santos, Taitano, Ferrera, Enriquez, Achas, Mico Usi, Juancho Mendoza, Bill Limes, Ron Chisato, Bubba Culpepper, and Taylor Watanabe.
