Marianas High School is a win away from sweeping the regular season of the girls varsity division of the 2008-2009 MISO Basketball League following the Lady Dolphins 57-48 triumph over Kagman High School yesterday at the MHS Gymnasium.

The 11-point win duplicated MHS’ 48-43 victory over the Lady Ayuyus in their first meeting last month and gave the Lady Dolphins their five triumphs in as many games.

MHS will play Mt. Carmel School tomorrow for its last game in the regular season. The Lady Dolphins-Lady Knights tiff was originally set for Feb. 2, but was cancelled due to a seminar for teachers scheduled on the same day.

Like in their first outing, the Lady Dolphins were off to a good start getting a lift from Lalaine Pagarao, Riza Tacliad, and Lena Guzman in the opening quarter.

The trio combined for nine of MHS’ 13 points in the first period putting the Lady Dolphins in the lead, 13-8.

Pagarao and Tacliad added one triple apiece in the second period, while Guzman chipped in four points, as the Lady Dolphins increased their lead to 17 at halftime, 31-14, after limiting Kagman to six markers in the second canto.

MHS led by as much as 20 points, 40-20, in the third period despite being outscored by Kagman, 15-13, in that quarter.

The Lady Ayuyus moved to within nine midway in the fourth quarter, 37-46, behind Yvonne Bennett and Mercedes Mesa’s successive baskets.

But five straight points from Pagarao halted Kagman’s rally and gave MHS a safe lead, 51-37, going into the last 2:30 of the game.

Pagarao paced the Lady Dolphins with 16 points, while Guzman contributed 11.

Bennett was the lone double-figure scorer for Kagman with 13 points. The Lady Dolphins finished the regular season with a 4-2 record and will be seeded second in the playoffs.

Kagman will face the Lady Knights (1-3) in the playoffs, while the Lady Dolphins will be paired against the winless Lady Rays (0-5).
