With just over a week left, a total of 710 rubber ducks have so far been sold as of yesterday for the first ever duck race, which will be held Feb. 21 at the Pacific Islands Club.

This means a total of $3,550 has been raised for the event, the proceeds of which would go to the Marianas March Against Cancer. The money will be used to help cancer patients and for research purposes.

PIC sports manager Lindsey Sosovec said the amount could go higher because each of the 45 PIC employees has been given 20 rubber ducks to sell. Sosovec said some of them would submit their collections by Friday this week.

She said they expect about a thousand pieces may have already been sold, which would mean they are already halfway to the target of 2,009 ducks.

She said they are confident of achieving that goal because many buyers could come in a few days before the race.

The ducks, which costs $5 each, will be released at the PIC lazy river from the Point Break slide. They will go down the slide and complete one revolution of the lazy river. The owner of the duck that crosses the finish line first will receive the grand prize of $1,000.

Those who want to purchase a rubber duck may visit the PIC sports department for payment and they will be provided a specific duck’s tag number. Each buyer will get a corresponding number for his duck and automatically qualify for the race. Winners don’t need to be present at the race in order to qualify for the grand prize.
