Marianas High School survived its toughest test yet in the boys varsity division of the 2008-2009 MISO Basketball League after pulling off a 83-75 overtime win over Kagman High School Wednesday night at the MHS Gymnasium.

A buzzer-beating jumper from Zack Tudela in regulation saved the Dolphins from absorbing its first loss in the season.

Kagman was ahead by a deuce, 71-69, and had possession in the last 4.3 seconds of the fourth quarter. Jimmy Brel inbounded the ball from midcourt on the right sideline and threw the ball to Jesse Iguel.

But the pass was too strong and it went past Iguel’s hands and landed a few inches away from MHS’ front court. Tudela picked up the loose ball and with the clocking wining down had a presence of mind of pulling up for a jumper at the top key near the free throw line.

He made the basket and sent the game into overtime.

In overtime, MHS tightened up its defense and gave up no field goals to Kagman.

After muffing a two-point lead in the dying seconds of the match and making a crucial miscue, the Ayuyus never recovered, as they scored only four free throws in the extra session.

Kagman committed too many errors in the last five minutes of the extended game and was bothered by the Dolphins’ intense defense.

Going into the last minute of the game, Edwin Camacho was about to nail Kagman’s first field goal in overtime, when he eluded his defender on a way to a layup. But Marvin Rabauliman came out of nowhere and swatted away Camacho’s shot.

Jericho Cruz, who started playing only in the fourth quarter, as he was nursing a flu, carried the cudgels, offensively for the Dolphins in overtime making six of MHS’s 12 points.

The win gave the Dolphins a sweep of the regular season, while the loss was the Ayuyus’ second in four games. Kagman also bowed to MHS in the first outing.

The Dolphins advanced to the finals and will wait the winner of the Ayuyus-Manta Rays playoffs next week.
