Inchcape, MBI boost playoff chances
Inchcape and MBI strengthened their playoffs bids in the 2009 Navy Hill Friendship Basketball League after recording contrasting wins Sunday at the Garapan Basketball Court.
Inchcape pulled off an 86-80 win over Athlete’s Foot in the second game, while MBI walloped the San Antonio Shooters in the curtain raiser, 88-69.
The 19-point win improved MBI’s record to 6-3 and put the team in solo fifth place in the team standings. Inchcape gained its fifth victory in 10 games and is now in solo sixth spot.
Only the Top 8 teams after the round-robin regular season will advance to the single elimination playoffs.
Athlete’s Foot dropped to a 5-5 record and will be battling Uncle Ben (5-6) and IT&E (4-6) for the last two playoff spots.
The Shooters (2-9), Rollers 670 (1-10), and Mobil (1-10) had been eliminated.
Excluding last night’s matches, four more regular season games will be played this week and the playoff round is expected to start next week.
Dan Mateo led MBI to an easy win, firing 31 points. J.R. Barrios and Leo Apelo added 18 and 12 markers, respectively.
MBI had a jackrabbit start with Mateo drilling 12 of the team’s 32 points in the period period and Barrios chipping in 10.
It was cruise control for MBI from then on.
In the second game, Inchcape withstood Athlete’s Foot fourth-quarter rally behind the timely baskets of Manuel Ajoste and Peter Mendiola.
Ajoste buried two triples in the fourth and scored 10 markers, while Mendiola contributed six to lift Inchcape to a six-point win.
