Military exec to discuss ‘tentative’ plans for Tinian
Maj. Gen. Eugene G. Payne Jr., the assistant deputy commandant for the U.S. Marine Corps’ Installations and Facilities, will be discussing with Tinian businesses the “tentative” military plans for the island that are separate from the $15 billion Guam military buildup.
Payne is the keynote speaker at the Tinian Chamber of Commerce’s monthly general membership meeting today starting at 11am at the Fleming Restaurant.
“The subject of his discussion with the Chamber of Commerce will be the tentative plans the Marines have for Tinian that are separate from the Joint Guam Program Office and the recent Mariana Islands Range Complex [draft environmental impact statement] published for comment,” said Phillip Mendiola-Long, president of the revived Tinian Chamber of Commerce.
The U.S. military released for public comment an over 1,400-page study on the potential environmental impact of increased military activities in training areas known as the Mariana Islands Range Complex.
The training and testing range complex includes land, air and sea areas on and around Guam, Rota, Tinian, Saipan and Farrallon de Medinilla.
The 45-day comment period ended yesterday, March 16.
Mendiola-Long invites the public to the meeting, which is free of charge, as the Tinian Chamber of Commerce will be hosting the event.
The first general membership meeting comes about a month after the Tinian Chamber of Commerce was revived and named Mendiola-Long president.
The group said it will be the voice of businesses on Tinian on issues such as the impact of a federal immigration system on the economy, the consequences of military activities, and capital improvement projects on the island.
