The Ford Rangers were solid in defense as well as in offense as they cruised to their third straight victory in the 2009 Budweiser Saipan Major League.

Shane Yamada was steady on the mound with eight strikeouts allowing four hits, a walk, and a run, while his teammates took care of the offense as the Rangers drubbed Young Guns, 13-1, Monday night at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios Ballfield.

Roy Celis drove in two runners on a double although he was tagged out while attempting to steal third.

J.P. Sablan and Franco Flores, however, scored in the process for the Rangers’ first two runs in the top of the fourth inning en route to seizing solo second place in the team standings, behind pacesetter Rock Steady (3-0).

Juan Iguel singled and reached home on a stolen base, while Ray Alepuyo followed suit on a double by Pete Tomokane, who himself scored on a single by Sablan for three more runs in the fifth.

They added four more runs in the sixth from Celis on a passed ball, Kelvin Kapileo on a single by David Camacho, who also scored on Alepuyo’s groundout RBI.

Four more runs for the Rangers came in the seventh that put Young Guns on the brink of defeat because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Carol Ada gave Young Guns its lone run of the game when he stole home in the bottom seventh after a two-out, one-ball, two-strike count on teammate Emery Camacho.

But Yamada completed the win as reigning MVP Tyrone Omar grounded out in a 4-3 play as Young Guns absorbed their third consecutive defeat.

Rock Steady, which dealt the Rangers their first defeat of the season, will try to keep its momentum going when it faces D-9ers (2-1) at 6pm tonight.

D-9ers are tied with Tanapag Falcons with 2-1 win-loss card, good for third.

The Falcons posted back-to-back wins by beating Korean Phoenix, 9-5, last Friday.

Pete Teigita issued 11 strikeouts after eight and a half innings, allowing seven hits, five runs, and seven walks.

The Falcons went to work early by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first en route to the lopsided win that gave Phoenix their third straight setback.
