A 63-year-old man who sexually abused a 5-year-old girl last year was sentenced yesterday to six years in prison.

Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth Govendo meted out a 10-year prison sentence on Sanito D. Estrera—all suspended except for six years—for the offense of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree.

After completing the prison term Estrera will be placed on 10 years of probation.

Govendo ordered the defendant to pay a $500 fine, court costs, and probation fees.

Govendo also required Estrera to perform 500 hours of community service and barred him from possessing or drinking any alcoholic beverages during his probationary period.

The Office of the Attorney General charged the defendant with sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree and another count of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree.

Estrera and his counsel, the Public Defender’s Office, signed a plea agreement with the government. The defendant pleaded guilty to sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree. The other count was dismissed as agreed by the parties.

Chief Prosecutor Kevin Lynch appeared for the government at yesterday’s hearing.

The plea agreement stated that on June 18, 2008, on Saipan, Estrera, 62, engaged in sexual contact with a 5-year-old girl.

Police said the abuse happened at a residence in Chalan Kanoa. Estrera admitted to police that he sexually abused the minor.
