NMI to request stimulus funds soon
Gov. Benigno Fitial said he would soon submit his request and certification to the federal government that funds received under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will promote economic growth and create jobs.
In order for any state or territory to receive funds, the governor must submit the certification within 45 days of President Obama signing the Act into law on Feb. 17. Or, if a governor does not submit a certification letter by the deadline, the state Legislature may accept the funds by adopting a concurrent resolution. After certification, funds will be distributed to local governments, councils of government, public entities, and public-private entities within the state or territory either by formula or at the jurisdiction’s discretion, according to recovery.gov, a Web site created by the Obama administration to keep the public up-to-date on the stimulus package.
As of yesterday afternoon, 34 states had submitted certification letters, as well as Washington D.C. and the governors of American Samoa and Puerto Rico.
A list of the states and territories that have submitted their request and certification letters can be viewed at recovery.gov. Copies of the letters can also be downloaded.
