Ortiz fires lowest score, but Siruelo wins March Ace
In-house player Jun Ortiz continued to take advantage of his familiarity of the Marianas Country Club as he topped the Fil-Taga Golfers Association March Ace of the Month Tournament last Sunday.
It was the second time the Marpi golf course maintenance crew finished first in the monthly tournament, but unlike February when he wound up with the championship, this time he had to yield the title to runner-up Nestor Siruelo.
Club rules stipulate that monthly winners can only win once a year and the runner-up automatically gets the plum.
Ortiz finished with a net score of 63, which was seven shots ahead of Siruelo’s net 70.
While Siruelo took home the March plum, Ortiz didn’t go home empty-handed as he pocketed the $100 first-place purse for his effort on the greens.
Both players actually completed the 18-hole play with identical gross scores of 85, the second lowest of the day, but Ortiz triumphed due to a handicap of 22 compared to Siruelo’s 15.
Mat Adony, a 19-handicapper, netted a 71 for third after submitting a gross score of 90.
Wil Retardo, the player with the lowest handicap of six, closed out with the lowest gross of 79 but that was only good for fourth with his net of 73.
Also coming in with a 73 at fifth place was Ted Malaran as the 18-handicapper had a gross of 91.
Four players netted 75, including January Ace winner and 2008 Golfer of the Year Mike Cruz. Cruz, with a handicap of 18, made a gross score of 93 for eighth place.
Other players with a net 75 were Joe Miranda at sixth place, Jun Calma at seventh, and Orly De Leon at ninth.
Fr. Many Corcuera and Rich Meimban tied with net scores of 77, good for 10th and 11th, respectively.
Jay Gatdula, a co-worker of Ortiz at MCC, came in at 18th place with a dismal net of 82. Another player who couldn’t get his rhythm going was Rey Ferraz, who managed an 81 for 16th spot.
The 16-handicapper carded a gross of 97, which was higher the net 72 he posted last month. Rounding out the finishers were Rene Batallones (78), Mando Guban (79), John Matsumoto (79), Jess Yumul (79), Jojo Geva (82), Manny Po (85), and Fred Cataluna (86).
