A team from the Secretariat of the Pacific Community visited Palau from March 9 to 13, 2009, to begin consultations with government and civil society representatives on the Palau–SPC joint country strategy. The strategy will guide the provision of SPC services to Palau for the next five years.

SPC, in consultation with government and civil society representatives, is preparing a JCS for each of its 22 Pacific Island member countries and territories. The JCS outlines in one integrated document the scope of planned SPC assistance to an individual country over a defined period. It presents a “whole of SPC” approach designed to improve the relevance and effectiveness of interventions at the country level, and to strengthen priority setting and monitoring.

The SPC team was led by Amena Yauvoli, Manager, SPC North Pacific Regional Office and included 10 other SPC staff, as well as participants from the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Program.

The consultations agreed on several approaches that will characterize SPC services in Palau over the next five years: capacity development and supplementation, including training for Palau counterpart staff; support for Palau’s priorities in a number of key information and communications technology sectors through innovative ICT initiatives, such as the Rural Internet Connectivity System and One Laptop Per Child programs; provision of funding to the Government of Palau and civil society organizations to support important initiatives; an increase in direct assistance to activities within Palau; and increased collaboration with other development partners. (SPC)
