High school seniors have until April 3 to apply for a Saipan Chamber of Commerce college scholarship.

The largest business group in the CNMI awards deserving high school students a one-time $1,500 scholarship grant to help defray the cost of their postsecondary education.

Kathryn H. Barry, chairperson of the Chamber’s education committee, said applicants should meet seven criteria to bag the scholarship grant, including enrollment as a senior in a secondary school on Saipan, a proof of acceptance to a college or university of their choice, and a grade point average of 3.5 or higher at the time of the application.

Applicants must also have completed either the SAT or ACT college extrance examinations and submit their scores, and must submit letters of recommendation from two people —one should be from a business employer or an educator.

The Chamber also requires applicants to complete a personal interview with the education committee, and submit an essay of no more than 1,000 words on the topic, “How I will use my education to improve the CNMI.”

Chamber scholarships will be awarded on June 3.

For the first time, the Chamber also offers this year two scholarships for students at the Northern Marianas Trades Academy, to be awarded on May 6.

The Chamber’s Educational Scholarship Fund provides one-time monetary awards to eligible high school seniors who demonstrate academic and personal excellence and who will be attending a two- or four-year college.

Funding for the Chamber’s scholarship program and other educational activities comes from the installation dinner’s silent auction, corporate challenge, golf tournament, and election year debates.
