April is Child Abuse & Neglect Prevention Month
On April 1, 2009, Gov. Benigno R. Fitial signed a proclamation declaring April as Child Abuse & Neglect Prevention Month.
In his proclamation, Fitial stated that “child abuse and neglect can be reduced if parents have the necessary support, skills and knowledge they need to raise and nurture strong, healthy children”.
Staff from the Division of Youth Services at the Department of Community and Cultural Affairs, service providers, and agencies working collaboratively with DYS were in attendance at the event.
In his remarks, DYS director Calvani P. Deleon Guerrero said, “Child abuse is a community problem. If we close our eyes to this problem, it will continue on, and the children will continue to be the victims.”
Activities planned for the month of April include parent development workshops, presentations in schools and Head Start Centers, and family oriented activities like the Big Truck Day. These activities will help raise the public’s awareness on the issues of child abuse and neglect and empower families, strengthening their abilities to raise and nurture their children well. DYS will publish its schedule of events at a later date.
April is the nationally recognized month for Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention. For more information on
