APIA, Samoa (Samoa Observer/PIR)—Samoa and six other countries have formed a group called the South Pacific Cruise Group, the Samoa Tourism Authority confirmed yesterday.

The group’s formation comes at the end of the annual Seatrade Convention, held in Miami, Florida on 16-19 March, Principal Marketing Officer, Muliagatele Stella Siale Fong said.

Member countries include Tahiti, Cook Islands, Fiji, New Caledonia, Australia, New Zealand and Samoa.

“In these trial times of global financial crisis, the South Pacific countries have come together to form a South Pacific Cruise Group to formulate strategies to ensure that more cruise ships and tourists visit our shores,” Muliagatele said in a statement.

“(The idea is to) work together to support and strengthen the Pacific connection (which) was one highlight of the meeting.”

The Seatrade Convention 2009 was another huge success, she said.

“Since Samoa attended the convention in 2007, it has helped to attract more cruise ships and tourists to our beautiful country,” she said.

Samoa’s delegation was led by General Manager of Samoa Shipping Corp., Papali’i Willie Nansen. It included Muliagatele and Ataataoletaeao Fau, of Samoa Scenic Tours.
