Yun’s Corp. said yesterday it agreed to the filing of a consent decree with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission because it didn’t want to get caught up in protracted litigation.

In a statement, it said that 99 Cents Supermarket, Yun’s Inc. and Town Inc. have settled to settle with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission for $80,000 on a lawsuit relating to sexual discrimination in the workplace.

“The local companies do not believe they acted improperly. However, the EEOC has such a deep financial backing and endless personnel, it is difficult for small companies like 99 Cents and Yun’s to fight with the EEOC, so they settle. For small companies like 99 Cents, it is best to pay some money and settle with the EEOC and then move along with business and serving customers,” it said.

In order to avoid any EEOC actions in the future, 99 Cents said it will train its employees in EEOC matters, and how to report and to prevent discrimination charges.

“99 Cents Supermarket, Yun’s Inc. and Town Inc. remain committed to being equal opportunity employers,” it added. (PR)
