UFO caging kicks off tomorrow
Action in the 7th United Filipino Organization Inter-Organizational Basketball League will start tomorrow at the JP Center Basketball Court in Garapan.
Eight teams will be vying for this year’s championship, namely Samahang Ilokano at Pangasinense, Bayani, VisMinDa, Samahang Manggagawang Filipino, MDX, Cabalen, Northern Marianas Bartenders Association, and NAMFREL.
The opening ceremony will start at 3pm.
SIP, which won the last edition of the league, will be playing in the opening game with its foe to be determined via a draw.
UFO caging is returning this season after thee years of absence.
UFO last hosted the inter-organization caging in 2005 with SIP topping Cabalen in a best-of-three title series, 2-1. SIP won Game 1, 88-79, but failed to sweep the series when Cabalen took Game 2, 99-85. SIP ended the series with a 95-86 victory in the deciding Game 3, notching its fourth title in six years of joining the league.
SIP also dominated the individual awards in the 2005 edition of the league. Edsel Mendoza was chosen Finals MVP, while Elmer Esdrelon made it to the Mythical Five, joining Mendoza, Andres “Jhun” Estolas of LIPS-Mobil, and Ronald Delos Reyes and Dalewin Cortez of Cabalen.
SIP gunner Bryan Flores was best in three points, Jawn Joyner and Bing Marasigan of Visminda were best in assists and free throws, respectively, Cortez was best in block shots, Chris Domingo of Cavite-Country House was best in steals, Marlon De Dios of MDX Amateur Radio-Armatech was best in rebounds, and Rowel Aranda of LIPS-Mobil was the top scorer for the season.
Twelve teams joined the 2005-2006 edition of the UFO caging.
