The series of qualifying rounds for the Saipan leg of the 2009 Budweiser King and Queen of the Diamonds Softball Tournament will start next month at the Capital Hill Ballfield.

The first qualifying round is set for June 13 and 14, while the next two are scheduled for Aug.1 and 2, and Sept. 26 and 27. The fourth/consolation round will be held on Oct. 3 and 4, while the Tournament of Champions-Saipan leg is set for Oct. 17 and 18.

Teams eligible for the Tournament of Champions must place first in one of the first three rounds. Teams aiming to qualify for the fourth/consolation round should participate in at least two of the first three rounds. Winner of the consolation round will then advance to the Tournament of Champions-Saipan Leg to play three other teams.

The victor of the Saipan leg will represent the CNMI to the 2009 Budweiser King and Queen of the Diamonds Softball Tournament and will play teams from Guam, Palau, and Pohnpei.

Saipan will host the four-island tournament from Nov. 12 to 15.

Shell Marianas, which was composed of the same players from three-time titlist No Ka Oi, ruled last year’s Saipan leg after downing, SaiPal, 10-2.

Shell Marianas also topped the first two qualifying tournaments of the KOD, while SaiPal prevailed in the third qualifying round after stunning Shell Marianas in the winners’ bracket of the playoffs. In the Final Four, Shell Marianas took the No. 1 spot, Natibu was seeded No. 2, and SaiPal was ranked No. 3. Total Chaos was No. 4, as it defeated SUFA, 14-11, in the wildcard qualifier.
