The Thespians of the Western Pacific Islands, the International Thespian Society Chapter in the Western Pacific, will be presenting their 2nd Annual Junior/Senior Play production, “A Night of Commedia dell’ Arte,” at the Multi-Purpose Center, on Tuesday, May 26, and Wednesday, May 27, 2009.

The productions will be directed, designed and performed by members of Thespian Troupes from Cha Cha Oceanview Junior High School, Hopwood Junior High School, Kagman High School, Marianas High School, Saipan American Education Foundation, and Saipan Southern High School.

The Three 16th and 17th century Commedias are: “The Courters,” a traditional Italian Commedia, and two Spanish Commedias originally written by Miguel de Cervates “The Magic of Salamanca,” and “The Marvelous Playbill,” which was adapted by Tim Kelly.

Commedia is one of the oldest of the performing arts, often done in the street, sometimes as puppet shows, or as short pieces between larger productions. The performers often wear traditional masks and standard costumes. Their characters were instantaneously recognizable to their audiences.

Spanish Commedia often focused on magic and devils, and Cervantes’ work was quite political.

Many of the cast members will be representing the CNMI this June at the International Thespian Festival in Lincoln Nebraska.

Proceeds from this production will be used to support the CNMI’s Thespian Chapter Scholarship Fund and future Chapter productions.

This year’s $1,000 scholarship winner, Sung Yul “Tommy” Baik, is part of the cast of “The Marvelous Playbill,” and will be attending The University of Iowa.

His scholarship was supported by funds from The Friends of the Arts, The Thespians of the Western Pacific Islands, and The Educational Theatre Association, parent group of the International Thespian Society.

Curtain is at 6:30pm. Tickets are $3 for students and $5 general admission. (PR)
