Friend: Murdered Korean businessman usual victim of robbery, burglary
The murdered Korean businessman in Tanapag was a usual victim of robbery and burglary the past few years, Saipan Tribune learned.
A close friend of the 65-year-old Jae Soung Shim disclosed that Shim’s New Star Market was robbed and burglarized thrice by unidentified person or persons believed to be also residents of Tanapag.
The friend, who requested anonymity, said Shim was actually planning since last year to move to the U.S. mainland where his daughter is staying.
The businessman, however, could not leave Saipan because he had over $60,000 credits that remained uncollected from some of his customers residing in the neighborhood.
“Mr. Shim would complain that some customers who owed him money would even harass him whenever he asked for payment and refused to give them more credits,” the friend said.
Shim was known as an expert in airplanes and his friends believe that he used to be a Korean military pilot.
Police arrested Ezra K. Deleon Guerrero, 25, last Tuesday for the murder of Shim during a robbery inside his store in Tanapag.
A detective stated in his report that prior to the attack, a witness saw Deleon Guerrero, put on a black ski mask and say: This is good for Papa-san, no!” The witness stated that the suspect appeared intoxicated.
The suspect was later seen handing out bills to children at a house near Shim’s store, New Star Market. A witness heard the defendant bragging he just knocked out Papa-san.
Shim, also known as Papa-sang in Tanapag village, was reading something behind the cashier’s counter on May 17 when Deleon Guerrero allegedly slowly entered and repeatedly struck him with a tangan-tangan stick on the head.
Autopsy showed that the victim sustained multiple skull fractures, which were a result of repeated blows to the head.
