Lady Rays edge Ayuyus in fast-pitch tourney
Saipan Southern High School needed an extra inning to thwart Kagman High School, 13-9, in the deciding Game 3 of their title duel in the Inaugural 2009 MISO Fast-pitch Softball Tournament Friday at the Miguel “Tan Ge” Basa Pangelinan Ballfield.
Regina Gatamngin, Tatiana Cabrera, Naithy Flores, and Coquina Teregeyo scored one run apiece in the eighth inning to give the Lady Rays the championship.
The Rays won Game 1 of the best-of-three title series, 14-5, but failed to wrap up the championship showdown early, as the Lady Ayuyus recovered in Game 2, 10-5.
In the do-or-die Game 3, Southern had control of the game in six and a half innings until a bottom of the seventh rally brought Kagman back in the game.
The Lady Rays led, 9-2, after six and a half innings, but saw their lead wiped out at the bottom of the seventh inning with Kagman scoring one run after another. A nine-run bottom of the seventh allowed the Lady Ayuyus to tie the game, 9-all.
Kagman had a chance to steal the win, as it had runners on first and second base with Remy Magofna at bat. Magofna swung, but had little power causing the ball to drop at the batter’s box in front of Southern catcher Cabrera. Cabrera then picked up the ball and tagged Magofna out for the third out, sending the game to an extra inning.
At the top of the eighth, Gatamngin gave the Lady Rays the lead, 10-9, as she reached home plate on Teregeyo single. Teregeyo also made it home, along with two other Lady Rays to give Southern a 13-9 lead, going into the bottom of the eighth inning.
Teregeyo, who pitched in no relief for the Lady Rays, sealed the win for Southern after striking out Kagman’s last two batters.
Kagman had a runner on third base when Teregeyo struck out the Lady Ayuyus’ fourth batter for the third out. The Lady Ayuyus were called for the first out after second batter Lynnae Cabrera flied out to centerfield.
Players in the Southern dugout ran toward the mound after Teregeyo struck out Kagman’s fourth batter to celebrate the Lady Rays’ title win.
MISO president Joel Punzalan awarded a perpetual trophy to Southern’s girls fast-pitch softball team in a brief ceremony at the “Tan Ge” ballfield.
