The economic crisis is taking its toll on the upcoming Liberation Day Queen pageant.

The organizing committee yesterday said they are having a hard time convincing prospective candidates to join the Liberation Queen contest because of the present economic condition.

Liberation Queen committee chair Rose T. Ada said only one of the four who had earlier submitted applications has confirmed her participation.

“Some of the candidates want to back out from the competition because they are having difficulty selling tickets,” Ada said.

The problem will be one of the main topics of discussion during the organizing committee’s next meeting today at the Saipan Mayor’s Office.

Jack Omar of the Emergency Management Office is the overall chairman.

“We’re inviting interested candidates to join,” said Ada, who also chaired the Liberation Queen committee in 2003 and 2004.

Ada will be proposing to the organizing committee to allow candidates to ask private companies to sponsor them.

For the first time since 2004, the pageant is open to any ethnicity.

“We target at least six candidates and we are still optimistic that we can fill the slots before the deadline, which is two weeks before the coronation night on July 4,” Ada said.

Meanwhile, organizing committee vice chair Isidoro Camacho said that they expect the contractor to finish the construction of booths and the main stage by June 4 at the Garapan Fishing Base.

The monthlong celebration will kick off on June 5.

As of yesterday morning, Misamis Construction has completed about 28 booths for sellers.

There are a total of 30 concessions that have applied for the event.
