Transition team formed for incoming NMC president
A transition team composed of deans and presidents of governance bodies at the Northern Marianas College has been created to assist the institution’s incoming president.
Dr. Sharon Hart has been hired as the new NMC president effective July 5. The transition team will be providing her all the information and assistance that she will need once she gets in.
Interim college president Lorraine T. Cabrera told the Board of Regents Monday that the transition team is composed of individuals who report directly to the president’s office, with the exception of the governance council heads.
Cabrera said she also included in the group the presidents of the faculty senate, staff senate, and Associated Students of NMC so they could share in the decision-making process of the new president.
However, it would still be up to the new CEO if she will retain the group’s composition, Cabrera said.
She said that the college’s human resource manager, Bobby Hunter, is in constant communication with Dr. Hart, who is reportedly busy packing for her relocation.
The schedule to introduce Dr. Hart to the college community is now being finalized, Cabrera said, as well as her formal introduction to members of the Legislature, Fitial administration, and community members. A “meet and greet” with the new NMC president and other community-outreach programs are also being eyed.
Board chair Juan Lizama instructed Cabrera to do what is necessary to ensure a smooth transition.
NMC has had no permanent president since January last year when Dr. Carmen Fernandez was suspended and later fired by the board due to alleged wrongdoings.
Meantime, Lizama and Cabrera flew to San Francisco Monday night to participate in the accreditation commission assembly, where the two are expected to be asked about the college’s accreditation.
NMC was placed on continued show-cause status after the commission found repeat deficiencies in its operation and management. Its fate will be decided by the commissioners after this month’s meeting.
