The Saipan Masters Baseball team has accrued two wins, a loss, and a draw thus far in the 2011 Pacific Islands Masters Baseball Tournament in Guam. The weeklong competition started on Saturday, June 4, and concludes on June 11.

Saipan defeated Guam, 6-4, in Part 1 of its double-header on opening day, and then settled for a 5-5 draw with the same opponent in their second meeting.

Then on Sunday, Saipan fell to Guam’s Adahi 40, 13-10, and came up a couple of runs short after rallying back from a 1-11 deficit in the last two innings.

Saipan regrouped Monday morning and knocked off the Adahi Cardinals, 7-6.

They played Guam’s Adahi 48 Tuesday and are in a must-win situation from here on out to stay alive in its pool.

The PIMBT occurs every other year. This year marks Saipan’s fourth appearance in the event. The Saipan Masters is the lone team representing Saipan in the competition. Notably, they advanced to the finals twice back in 2005 and 2007.

Twelve teams are competing in the tournament, which is formatted with pool play and uses its own special point system.

Games are limited to seven innings and three points are awarded for a win, two points for a draw, and one per loss. Saipan has six points thus far in the competition.

The Saipan Masters’ roster includes Ben Duenas, Ben Cabrera, Ben Mesa, Jess Cabrera, Bob O’Connor, Ted Ngewakl, Bob Lizama, Darren Flores, Mark Flores, Ross Manglona and Guam-based Saipan players Tony Pangelinan, Frances George, Ben Borja, and Mario Aguon.
