When Angel Demapan is not busy coordinating meetings and writing press releases for the governor on Capital Hill, he is hard at work doing graphic design and running his T-shirt business.

Demapan founded 82 Threads Co. in n 2006 in Honolulu, Hawaii as a way for CNMI residents living abroad to represent their identity and pride for their homeland.

“Today, 82 Threads Co. is proud to return to its roots as an up-and-coming business venture here in Saipan,” he told Saipan Tribune.

82 Threads Co., Demapan said, is envisioned to increase the presence of local apparel in the Northern Marianas.

According to Demapan, the island’s apparel industry has evolved into a whole new class of artists, with its own unique influences and audiences.

“At the end of the day, it’s gratifying to offer our valued customers good, quality clothing that at the same time defines who you are and where you’re from. This is our home, this is our culture. Reflecting our spirits on fabric is a great way to showcase our greatness as islanders,” he explained.

82 Threads Co. offers two clothing brands: Marianas Built and Poksu.

“The Marianas Built brand is already a fan favorite,” said Demapan. “The brand pays tribute to the islands’ cultures and traditions.”

Poksu, which means “accurate” or “precise” in Chamorro, has a more modern look and feel and is also gaining a respectable fan base from military service members, athletes, and young adults.

“The Poksu brand has already sponsored two softball teams that have won two consecutive championships in as many outings,” said Demapan.

All products of 82 Threads Co., Demapan said, are available at the 670 Rock Steady Shop along Middle Road. He said the company also plans to launch a clothing line for women and children.

Demapan said that 82 Threads Co. merchandise will also be available at the Flame Tree Arts Festival under the Rock Steady booth.
