PH Open lures 50 golfers
The 113th Philippine Independence Day Open Golf Tournament has attracted around 50 golfers and the organizing Fil-Taga Golfers Association is hoping the number will increase to 70 when the competition tees off at Coral Ocean Point tomorrow.
“Interested golfers can still register on the day of the tournament, so we hoping we could surpass last year’s turnout,” outgoing Fil-Taga president Ted Malaran said.
Last year, 60 golfers joined the tournament with Darrel Fair topping the field.
Malaran is encouraging CNMI golfers to support the Philippine Open, as part of the proceeds from the annual tournament will be donated to Karidat and Commonwealth junior golfer R.J. Macaranas. The 12-year-old golfer will be competing in various world championships this summer.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Open will have a shotgun start at 12pm, but participants are advised to be at the venue on or before 10am. Then at 6pm, the awards ceremony will start with Fil-Taga handing out prizes to the Top 5 finishers in the double-peoria tournament.
The Top 3 placers will go home with trophies and $700, $500, and $400, while the fourth and fifth will take home $200 and $100, respectively.
Golfers also have a chance to win two hole-in-one prizes, as $5,000 each is at stake at hole Nos. 3 and 12. Closest to the pin contests on these two holes, along with the No. 7 and 14 holes will also take place and golfers can join the competitions by purchasing a mulligan at $5 apiece.
This year’s Philippine Open is sponsored by Mobil Oil Mariana Islands., Inc., Asahi Brewers Ltd., Joeten Wholesale, Pacific Wines & Spirits, Yaong Corporation, K.L.
