Starting this school year in August, Kagman High School will be a opening a “Freshmen Academy” to help first year students transition to a high school environment.

Kagman High principal Alfred Ada said Friday that the academy will be the first to be offered in a public high school on island.

Ada said the school’s high discipline referral rate is the main reason for creating the new program.

“In the last three school years, we recorded a high discipline referral rates and most of the students who failed in their academics are freshmen enrollees. We need to implement this program because our data speak that we need to do something for our freshmen students,” Ada told Saipan Tribune.

This new school year, Kagman High is expecting over 140 new students—a slight decrease from previous enrollments of freshmen students that usually go up to 200.

Ada refused to disclose the school’s discipline referral and failure rates, saying the school is now addressing the problem.

“We need to help students by preparing them for the high school environment as well as the curriculum for them. We believe that the high failure rating in classes among freshmen was also a result of not communicated expectations,” said Ada.

The Freshmen Academy will offer sessions that would help build the character of students. It is separate from required classes offered for the school year. Ada said the school is finalizing the schedule and all details of the program to ensure its smooth opening.

Besides the academy, Kagman High will also expand its advanced placement courses. It will offer students the following new AP subjects: literature, language composition, environmental science, U.S. history, calculus, and U.S. government. The syllabus for AP program has to be certified by the national college board.

Students who complete a number of these courses in high school may be exempted from taking pre-requisite subjects in college.
