Tammy beats Mami in Salvation Army 5K
The Inaugural Salvation Army Food Bank 5km Fun Run & Walk had a surprise top female finisher in Tammy Ackerman.
The youth middle distance runner defeated perennial road race winner Mamiko Oshima-Berger by only three seconds. The 12-year-old Ackerman completed the Saturday race from Salvation Army’s office across Hopwood Junior High School to Mobil Station in Koblerville and back in 20 minutes and 38 seconds, while Oshima-Berger timed in at 20:41.
Oshima-Berger, who won the 18th Annual Tom Picarro “Silver Streak” Memorial Fun Run a week before joining Salvation Army’s race, said she and Ackerman ran together before the latter sprinted to the finish in the last 200 yards.
“She had a good sprint and I am happy to see a young runner like her run so fast,” Oshima-Berger.
Despite losing in the overall race in the female division, Oshima-Berger still topped the adults category, beating Suzy Kindel (21:16) and Irma Halaby (22:15).
Ackerman reigned supreme in the female youth division, winning by about four minutes against Vanessa Bartolo (24:21). Soleil Lamar completed the Top 3 with a time of 32:27.
In the male adults division, as expected Ketson”Jack” Kabiriel ruled the field with a time of 16:32, followed by Tom Linden (16:36) and Aric Bickel (17:05).
In the youth division, Mark Calage finished first after clocking in at 32:23, followed by Eshaan Rejabhosale (36:55).
Sixty-four runners joined the race and they were soaked early, as a few minutes after they left the starting line it rained. The course was a bit slippery and runners opted to slow down a bit.
No entrance fees were required at the race, as runners were only asked to bring canned goods for Salvation Army’s soup kitchen.
