Jimmy Wang ended Jerry Soriano’s winning run in the VFW Post 3457 9-Ball Tournament.

Wang topped the July 2 tournament, beating Soriano in the finals. Soriano won the last two weekly tournaments sponsored by VFW Post 3457.

A draw in the first round of the seven-player field advanced Wang to the second round where he faced and defeated Taylor Watanabe. Then in the semifinals, Wang collided and prevailed over Eugene Borja to make it to the finals against Soriano.

Soriano claimed his first win over John Mongami, but lost his second match against Borja to drop to the loser’s bracket. In the loser’s group, Soriano edged Watanabe and then avenge his defeat to Borja to arrange a finals showdown against Wang.

Soriano ruled the June 18 and 15 tournaments with his second victory against Erwin Gomez. A win over Borja in the first round advanced Soriano to the quarterfinals against Simon Kapileo. Kapileo won to march into the semis against Gomez, who prevailed to gain the first finals berth.

Twin wins in the loser’s bracket—against Watanabe and Kapileo—kept Soriano’s bid for back-to-back victories alive, as he claimed the second finals berth. Soriano completed the come-from-behind win when he stunned the then undefeated Gomez.

The VFW Post 3457 holds the 9-ball competition every Saturday with the weekly winners eventually participating in the Battle of the Champions. (Saipan Tribune)
