Sapong duplicates PB in 100m run
CNMI runner Reylynn Sapong matched her personal best time in the 100m sprint after racing in the 2011 IAAF World Youth Championships yesterday morning in Lille, France.
Sapong clocked in at 14.25 seconds in Day 1 of the five-day competition and it was also listed as her previous PB (electronic time). The 16-year-old runner’s PB in hand time in the 100m run was 13.53 seconds made during the McDonald’s-PSS All Schools Athletics Championship at the Oleai Sports Complex in May this year.
The CNMI runner was on Heat 8 with seven other runners. Jennifer Madu of the U.S. won the heat with a time of 11.79 seconds and advanced to the semifinals together with Brazil’s Julia Schwan (12.04 seconds) and Japan’s Yumi Nobayashi (12.11). Thailand’s Supawan Thipat (12.37 seconds) came in at fourth, followed by Kazakhstan’s Nina Prudnikova (12:54 seconds), Romania’s Andreea Grecu (12.74 seconds), Macedonia’s Valbona Selimi (13.25 seconds) and Sapong.
Eight qualifying heats were scheduled in the early morning 100m race and 24 made it to the next round. Bulgaria’s Galina Nikolova posted the best qualifying time when she logged 11.65 seconds on Heat 3. Other heat winners were Japan’s Anna Doi (11.83 seconds), Canada’s Khamica Bingham (11.72 seconds), the U.S’ Myasia Jacobs (11.85 seconds), Brazil’s Tamiris de Liz (11.84 seconds), Jamaica’s Christania Williams (11.66 seconds), and Nigeria’s Deborah Oluwaseun Odeyemi (11.84 seconds). The semifinals of the 100m run was scheduled early this morning.
The 100m race was the only event Sapong was entered in and she was also the CNMI’s lone representative in the 2011 IAAF World Youth Championships. Sapong left Saipan last Sunday for the tournament in France and is expected to return on island before the week ends.
