The Saipan Soccer School will be kicking off the 2011 Saipan Soccer School Futsal League on July 18 at the TSL Sports Complex.

The inaugural league will have competitions for both men’s and women’s divisions. Organizers are looking to have a maximum of six teams in the women’s field and eight in the men’s. Games will be played every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Each match will be played in two 25-minute halves with a 10-minute break. There will be four games every play date with the first match starting at 5:30pm and the last at 8:30pm. Format for both divisions is 5-a-side and winner in each category will be determined after the double round-robin competition. Teams will be awarded three points for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss.

Registration is only $10 per player and interested teams are encouraged to have as many players as they can in their rosters. Each player must sign a waiver form, while parents or guardians of U18 participants should also sign the waiver.

“The organizers are excited to promote this fast-paced and exciting sport on the island. Futsal requires more ball control and passing in small spaces compared to the regular football game,” Saipan Soccer School stated in a press release.

According to Wikipedia, futsal is derived from the Portuguese futebol de salão and the Spanish fútbol de salón (colloquially fútbol sala), which can be translated as “hall football” or “indoor football”. During the sport’s second world championships held in Madrid in 1985, the name fútbol de salón was used. Since then, all other names have been officially and internationally changed to futsal.
