Tinian’s resident Juan DLC. Cabrera has become the first beneficiary of the Tinian’s Weatherization Assistance Program Formula Grant under the CNMI Energy Division. The WAP is an income-based program that “aims to reduce energy costs for low-income families, particularly for the elderly, people with disabilities, and children, by improving the energy efficiency of their homes while ensuring their health and safety.”

Based on the energy audit, Cabrera received on July 11, 2011, his energy efficient replacement refrigerator and a window-type air condition unit, replaced all incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs and received two smoke detectors installed as part of the WAP “safety program.”

Tinian Mayor Ramon Dela Cruz, who was present during the presentation of the appliances, congratulated Cabrera for being the program’s first recipient in the municipality and was very grateful to the CNMI Energy Division and WAP staff for all the hard work and dedication that was put into the program in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy, WAP.

WAP manager Lorraine M. Seman and energy auditor Eugene Borja were both on Tinian from July 11 to 15, 2011, during which a total of 14 other applicant homes were weatherized. Forty-one homes on the island of Tinian were allocated to receive services, but because of the high volume of applications received during the week, the WAP program for Tinian has exceeded its cap limit. However, once the program re-opens, more applications will be entertained.

“It is pleasing to know that the Tinian residents are availing of the WAP program and based on energy audits performed, Tinian residents are taking energy conservation efforts by replacing their incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs. This is the beginning to conserving energy and saving money at the same time,” said Seman.
