Bayani/Mobil sneaks past Cavite
Bayani/Mobil eked out an 88-84 come-from-behind win over Cavite/Andok’s in the curtain-raiser at the UFO Inter-Organization Basketball Friendship League 2011 Bud Cup on Tuesday night at the TSL Sports Complex.
Bayani/Mobil fell behind by five points, 78-83, with 1:59 left in the match, but capitalized on Cavite/Andok’s errors and missed shots to recover and win its first game of the season.
Ron Gamboa led Bayani Mobil’s comeback, scoring seven points in the team’s 11-1 finish in the last two minutes of the match.
Gamboa started his string of points with a triple, cutting the lead to two, 83-81, with 1:30 left on the clock. Before his trey, Jon Artates had a rare four-point play when he made his layup and then drew an unsportsmanlike foul from Bayani/Mobil’s Larry Sharry. Cavite/Andok’s also regained possession after the infraction, but instead of taking advantage of the situation it muffed several shots from downtown and committed costly errors, allowing Bayani/Mobil to grab the win.
The first miscue came from the backcourt, as Fando Muleta was double teamed by Gamboa and Estolas. Estolas eventually picked up the loose ball and fed Gamboa for the layup and equalizer, 83-83, with 1:11 left on the clock.
Cavite/Andok’s lost the ball anew with Gamboa intercepting Artates pass to Tim Wesley and the Bayani/Mobil swingman went straight to the basket and drew a foul. Gamboa made both free throws to put his team in the lead, 85-83.
Wesley also trooped to the foul line in the ensuing play and split his charities to keep Cavite in the game, 84-85, with 52.6 seconds to go in the game.
Derrick Aughenbaugh made it a three-point game, 87-84, when he made an undergoal stab off his own miss, with 36 seconds left on the clock. Cavite sued for time to orchestrate a play, but when game resumed, it failed to score with both Fando Muleta and Artates missing from downtown.
Cavite was then forced to give up a foul to stop the clock, which read at 3.2 seconds. Estolas stepped on the stripe, faltered in his first free throw, but made the second one to ensure the win.
Gamboa top-scored for Bayani/Bil with 20, while Muleta had 19 for Cavite, but missed his last three 3-point attempts after making three triples in the third period.
Namfrel/Proa 93,
Ali’i Konflikt 83
In the second game of the night, Namfrel/Proa won its debut game after topping MAFEA Ali’i Konflikt, 93-83.
The loss was Ali’i Konflikt’s second in as many games.
Namfrel/Proa leaned on its balance offense to outgun Ali’i Konflikt. The Rufino Aguon-coached Proad had all its 12 players making it to the scoreboard. Pete Iguel tallied 20 points, while Jack Lizama and Dan Barcinas chipped in 12 and 11, respectively. Six other players logged at least two field goals apiece.
Iguel drilled 10 of his total points in the third period, turning Namfrel/Proa’s 44-38 halftime lead to a 69-58 advantage, entering the final canto. Namfrel/Proa then did a good job protecting the driver’s seat in the fourth quarter to hand Ali’i Konflikt back-to-back losses.
