Athletes representative election set
Athletes will now be represented in the Pacific Games Council’s Executive Board.
The Council has announced it will be holding an election for athletes representative to the PGC Executive Board during the 2011 Pacific Games in New Caledonia later this month.
“For the first time, the Pacific Games Council’s Executive Board will welcome an athlete into its ranks with the election of an athletes representative taking place at the 2011 Pacific Games,” the Council stated in its website.
Three athletes have been nominated for the position. The list includes Fiji’s Carl Probert, New Caledonia’s Diane Bui-Duyet, and Vanuatu’s Anolyn Lulu. Probert is a five-time Olympic swimmer (1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, and 2008) and Fiji national record holder. Bui-Duyet is also a swimmer and was named the Best Female Athlete in the 2003 Pacific Games in Fiji after winning 10 events and making five Games records.
Lulu is a table tennis player and won two gold medals, one silver, and one bronze in the 2009 Pacific Mini Games in Cook Islands. She was selected as Vanuatu’s Most Outstanding Athlete of the Decade (1999-2009) for notching five gold medals in four consecutive Pacific Games (2003, 2005, 2007, and 2009).
Election will be held during the two-week competition and all athletes registered are eligible to vote. Election will take place at the Athletes’ Village. The winner will be announced during the closing ceremony.
The current PGC Executive board is composed of president Vidhya Lakhan of Fiji, vice president James Tobin of the Federated States of Micronesia, secretary general David Boyd of New Caledonia, treasurer John Tierney of the Cook Islands, past president Ric Blas of Guam, member Mel McDonald of Papua New Guinea, and executive director Andrew Minogue.
The 2011 Pacific Games will run from Aug. 27 to Sept. 10 with over 3,000 athletes from the more than 4,000 registered participants expected to compete in the 15-day quadrennial event.
