Pacific Postal holds off 8th Division
Pacific Postal withstood 8th Division’s rally to pull off a 75-69 victory during their game in the 2011 Blue Haus Invitational Basketball League on Tuesday night at the Gualo Rai Basketball Court.
Pacific Postal went ahead by double digits in the final two minutes of regulation, but saw its lead trim down to three in the closing minute of the fourth quarter. Fortunately for Pacific Postal, Mico Usi made three free throws, Rick Brien added one charity, and Angel Bautista had a two-pointer in the end to preserve the win.
Mel Usi top-scored for Pacific Postal with 24 points, making 15 of them in the first half for the team’s 36-29 halftime lead. Pacific Postal pressed on and maintained a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half, before Dan Mateo led 8th Division’s comeback in the fourth quarter.
Pacific Postal thought the game was in the bag and opted for an early line-up change halfway through the fourth quarter and almost gave the win away.
Mawati 67, Marianas Water 53
In other results, Mawati brushed off Marianas Water, 67-53, in Sunday’s opener.
Mawati took an early 17-12 lead over Marianas and never looked back. Mawati players were on target, as nine players scored in the opening frame,
On defense, Mawati held Marianas Water to eight points in the second period to widen the gap to 16 at the break, 36-30.
Arun Avilla and Jerome Reyes scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Mawati. Marianas Water’s John Paul Darag and Dae Min Jeon combined for 25 markers.
IFashion 75, Life Force 70
In the second game last Sunday, IFashion defeated Life Force, 75-70.
IFashion started slow and fell behind after the opening period, 15-17. However Angelo Fernando put IFashion on top at halftime, 34-28, after finishing the first half with 13 points.
IFashion turned it up some more after the break and jumped in front, 57-43, heading into the final canto. Fernando took a seat in the third, but Mike Achas filled the void with nine markers.
Life Force made repeated comeback bids, but ran out of time. Fernado and Achas combined for 32 points, while Oliver Santiago and Marlo Ibanez tallied 15 points apiece for Life Force.
Cell Pro 71, Jacem 68
In the first game last Saturday, Cell Pro snuck past Jacem Printing, 71-68.
Jacem Printing lost despite taking an early 22-18 lead in the first quarter.
The match was tied at 28-all at midpoint, as Cell Pro and Jacem combined for only seven field goals in the second quarter. Action warmed up a little in the third, as Cell Pro managed to grab the lead, 44-40.
Both teams picked up their scoring in the payoff canto, but Cell Pro had the edge in the end when Eric Dulfo delivered 10 points, including a pair of pressured free throws that sealed the win. He finished with a team-high 22 points, while Jacem’s Brandon Aulerio led the field with 26.
Joeten 57, Fong’s Bakery 54
In the nightcap, Joeten outlasted Fong’s Bakery, 57-54.
Both teams were lethargic in Saturday night’s late match and Joeten went ahead by only three, 12-9.
Joeten then contained Fong’s to 12 points in the second period to keep the upper hand at the break 26-21. Fong’s Jay Danipog managed five of his team’s six baskets in that quarter, while Christian Devero led Joeten with 12 points in the first half.
Joeten kicked it in gear in the third and shot ahead, 47-34. Rodney Sacramento came off the bench and scored 12 points. Fong’s tried to mount a late rally and stuffed Joeten to 10 points in the payoff period, but still fell short.
Devero paced Joeten with 19 points, while Danipog finished with a game-high 20.
