More volunteers are needed to assist in the reconstruction efforts in areas that were heavily damaged by the devastating earthquake in Japan last March.

Yoichi Matsumura of Pacific Development Inc. said that Holiday Tour Micronesia in Guam is collaborating with the Morioka Branch Office of Kinki Nippon Tourist Co., Ltd. in Japan in seeking for individuals to participate in the Holiday Tour Micronesia volunteer work.

The volunteer work will be done in Tohoku, Morioka, Iwate Prefecture for five days and four nights.

“The area has received tremendous damage by the recent tsunami and volunteers are being solicited in its reconstruction effort up to this time,” said Matsumura.

The volunteers, however, will have to shoulder their airfare and accommodations, noted Matsumura.

According to Matsumura, Continental Airlines has expressed its support for the program by extending a discounted fare for the volunteers.

Each volunteer coming from Saipan will have to pay $1,610 for airfare, meals, and twin sharing room accommodation. Those who want to stay in a single room will have to pay an additional $260 each.

Matsumura said the volunteers will meet with the Iwate Prefecture Social Worker Association in Japan where they will be briefed about the work plan.

He expressed hope that once information about the need for volunteer work is out, they can elicit interest from the community.

Matsumura added that if Saipan will have up to 20 volunteers, then the group can represent the CNMI. If not, then the Saipan volunteers can join the Guam team.
