A jury trial began yesterday in the lawsuit filed in federal court by a dentist against Dental Care and its owners, who also filed a counter claim against her.

U.S. District Court for the NMI visiting judge Mark Bennett presided over the jury trial of Dr. Masha Maxim, a Canadian dentist.

Attorney Stephen Nutting is counsel for Maxim. Attorneys Michael Dotts and Ramon Quichocho are representing defendants Dental Care and its owners, Rodney Stewart and Scot Thompson.

When Saipan Tribune left the courtroom yesterday afternoon, attorney Dotts was still conducting the defendants’ opening statements.

Maxim is suing Dental Care and its owners for terminating her and for allegedly failing to make good of their promises. She is demanding a total of $386,000 in lost wages and damages from her former employers.

Thompson filed a counterclaim against Maxim for allegedly assaulting him in the clinic. He is seeking $80,000 from Maxim for lost income and damages.

In his recent order, Judge Bennett ruled that there is no need to conduct a separate trial in Maxim’s lawsuit and Thompson’s counterclaim.
