Superior Court associate judge Kenneth L. Govendo ordered yesterday that the bail for Police Officer 2 Jerome Agulto Reyes be kept at $10,000 cash and directed him to stay away from his girlfriend, whom he allegedly beat up in front of her child at their Kannat Garden’s Apartment residence.

Preliminary hearing will be on Aug. 25 at 9am. Arraignment will be on Aug. 29 at 9am.

The 35-year-old Reyes appeared in court without a lawyer and stated that he could not afford to hire his own counsel.

Govendo said he was informed that the Office of the Public Defender could not represent Reyes as the OPD is already representing the alleged victim in a separate case.

When asked by the judge about his service firearm, Reyes said it is already with the Department of Public Safety.

“You are not going to be re-issued a service firearm until this case is over because this is alleged domestic violence,” Govendo told Reyes.

Reyes’ father, former DPS commissioner Sandy Tudela, was present at yesterday’s hearing.

Reyes, assigned to the Koban Station in Garapan, was arrested Tuesday afternoon for assault and battery, disturbing the peace, assault, and child abuse.

Detective Peter A. Aldan stated in his report that the girlfriend had called a probation officer Monday afternoon that she was a victim of domestic violence involving her live-in partner, Reyes. The victim reportedly sustained bruises on the right arm, left wrist, shoulder, neck, rear right ear, and right side of the back.

The beating allegedly happened on Saturday at 2:30pm, in the presence of the girlfriend’s 9-year-old daughter.
