Copper wire thieves hit the Tanapag Elementary School over the weekend, causing a shutdown of electric power at the entire school complex.

About 100 to 145 feet of secondary copper wiring were stolen, according to Department of Public Safety spokesman Travis Hurst yesterday.

Hurst said a Tanapag Head Start staff called DPS dispatch yesterday after noticing they had no power at 8am.

Upon further inspection, Hurst said, Head Start members determined that the power line was no longer attached to the building.

The Head Start staff informed responding police officer David Rabauliman that the secondary power line from the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. power pole to their building was missing.

A CUC representative later found out that 100 to 145 feet of secondary wiring had been cut from the pole and the building.

Hurst said investigators believe that the theft occurred between 5pm on Saturday to 7:30pm on Sunday.

Hurst said the stolen secondary line provided power to the entire Tanapag Elementary School complex and not just the Head Start building.
