Drunk man who pushed cop gets 8-day prison term
A man accused of pushing a police officer while drunk has entered a guilty plea and was slapped with an eight-day prison term.
Fan Zhang Zhu pleaded guilty to resisting arrest as part of a plea deal.
Superior Court Presiding Judge Robert C. Naraja on Monday sentenced Zhu to six months in prison, all suspended except for eight days. Zhu will no longer serve prison time as he was given credit for time served.
Zhu was placed on probation for six months and required to pay a $100 fine, $60 probation fee, and $25 court assessment fee. He was ordered to perform 25 hours of community service.
The Office of the Attorney General charged Zhu in October with resisting arrest and assault and battery.
Zhu and counsel, assistant public defender Eden Schwartz, signed the plea deal with the government represented by assistant attorney general Jacinta Kaipat.
Zhu reportedly pushed police officer Steven Castro in the arm and chest on July 17, 2013, on Saipan, and resisted arrest by pulling away his hands as the officer was attempting to handcuff him.
The police report stated that Castro had responded to a complaint at Lucky Seven Poker in Susupe where he then heard a commotion coming from the back of the arcade. Castro traced the noise to a tin house where he saw through an open window to men pushing each other.
Two women entered the house and assured the officer that everything was fine as they were just having a drinking party.
Zhu, who was allegedly drunk and belligerent toward his drinking partners, pushed Castro on the arm and chest while asking who called the police.
Upon being informed that he was being arrested for assaulting a police officer, Zhu pulled his hand away and went back inside the tin house.
Noticing a golf club and a cleaver knife within Zhu’s reach, Castro used pepper mace on him.
Zhu then allegedly stood in a fighting stance with both fists clenched, police said. He was subsequently arrested.
