CUC warns of possible contamination near Agingan Point

The Commonwealth Utilities Corp. reported yesterday the potential contamination of water near the Agingan wastewater treatment plant and cautioned the public not to fish or swim in the affected area until the potential contamination is resolved.
“While unconfirmed, we believe the discharge may present a temporary risk to public health because of harmful organisms found in wastewater. We urge caution and advise the public to avoid any fishing, swimming, wading, and other water contact recreation in the areas adjacent to Agingan Point,” the CUC statement said.
The agency disclosed that it suffered a failure in its southern sewerage conveyance system near the Agingan Wastewater Treatment Plant. CUC crew worked on-site throughout the weekend to repair problems, one being a force-main repair completed on Saturday, with no additional overflows.
Subsequently, CUC said that two pumping stations clogged and there is sewage overflow in the areas south of Pacific Islands Club. Crews continue to make repairs and remediate any overflows, according to CUC.
“Due to this failure, we have experienced untreated wastewaters entering the waters in the areas of Agingan Point. The CUC Lab has performed marine water samples in the affected areas and test results are due mid-day Tuesday,” CUC added.
