Two of three men were arrested on Thursday night shortly after they allegedly beat up a man for embarrassing their race at the tourist district in Garapan.

Nelson Anson Saimon, 24, and Alfonso Kintin, 34, were taken to the Superior Court yesterday on charges of assault and battery, and disturbing the peace.

Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo imposed a $1,500 cash bail each for the defendants’ temporary release.

As of press time, it was not clear yet whether the third suspect, Sanchiro Sigfriet, was arrested.

Detective Catherine B. Pangelinan stated in her report that two police officers responded to Coral Avenue in western Garapan on Thursday at 11:37pm after the Department of Public Safety received a call about four men fighting in front of a hotel.

One officer spotted the victim, Aurelio Rayong, walking toward a restaurant. He had no shirt on and wore only short pants. His nose and left cheek were bloodied and his lips were swollen.

A witness pointed to the location of three suspects. Kintin tried to run away, but because he was limping he rested on a bench along Paseo De Marianas, where an officer caught him.

The witness said the victim was walking north and stopped by a public trash can in front of a restaurant.

Kintin shouted in Chuukese at the victim. Kintin then allegedly choked and repeatedly punched the victim. When the victim tried to run away, Sigfriet came and punched him.

The victim was not hit and made a counter-punch on the face, knocking down Sigfriet to the ground.

The victim and the three suspects went separate ways right before police officers arrived at the scene.

Detective Pangelinan said according to the victim, Kintin was just drunk and looking for a fight.

The victim said earlier that night, Kintin shouted at him that he was an embarrassment to their race because he would always eat food found in trash cans.

The victim told police that the suspects would shout or tease him for no reason.

According to court records, on Sept. 21, 2006, Saimon, armed with a metal pipe, reportedly struck the head of a Chinese man outside KBBQ Restaurant in Chalan Piao. The victim almost died due to multiple injuries on the head.

In October 2004, the Superior Court imposed an 18-month jail term on Saimon, who, together with a juvenile, robbed a Chinese couple and sexually assaulting the woman in San Antonio in March 2003.

In August 2006, police arrested Saimon again, for allegedly stealing a vehicle belonging to a Chinese man in Garapan and engaged police officers in a car chase in Chalan Kanoa.
