No need to panic—USGS
There is no reason to panic about the spate of earthquakes that hit Saipan last week.
U.S. Geological Survey program coordinator James E. Quick made the assurance during a presentation at the weekly Saipan Rotary Club meeting held Tuesday at the Hyatt Regency Saipan.
The geologist is on the island with Dr. Christopher F. Waythomas from the USGS Alaska Volcano Observatory, who also spoke in front of the Rotarians.
The two geologists are now working with the Emergency Management Office to study the risks and hazards of the eruption on Anatahan, which according to Quick and Waythomas, may or may not have caused the earthquake last weekend.
Quick said that, while they are in town, they will conduct with EMO “numerical modeling” simulation that will determine the probable areas where a tsunami could have a direct hit on CNMI. They said this process may take a while, but as soon as they have the information they will immediately release the details to the public.
Waythomas stressed that the main objective of their visit on the island is to inform the people that there really is no need to panic about earthquakes, and as of this time, they are doing their best to help the CNMI understand this particular type of natural calamity. (Marconi Calindas)
