Bowling and beach volleyball take spotlight
Bowling and beach volleyball took center stage in the local sports scene the past week.
Southpaw Richard Leong affirmed that 2005 was indeed his year after beating youth bowler Raymond Zapanta in the season-ending Pepsi King of the Lanes Tenpin Bowling Tournament last Sunday at the Capital Bowling Center.
Leong, who won three monthly King of the Lanes titles last year, dominated Zapanta in the finals en route to a 212-153 win.
The Northern Mariana Islands Volleyball Association, meanwhile, held its third 2006 Micronesian Games men’s qualifier last weekend and the Mutt and Jeff combination of Marino Pungilug and Bruce Berline were the last pair standing on the beach.
Pungilug and Berline rose from the losers’ bracket to upset the favored duo of Dan Westphal and Nick Castro, 21-19, 15-10, in the finals.
Last Sunday also saw S.S. Ghost take the top plum in the inaugural Pepsi 5 Man Pro Jam at Hard Corps Paintball in Gualo Rai. The champions were untouched in the preliminary rounds before getting the better of Mallari Enterprises Recon in the finals.
The D9ers and Pirates also raced to 1-0 leads in their respective semifinal match-ups with the Hustlers and Tanapag No Zone in the Fall edition of the Saipan Major League. The D9ers defeated the Hustlers 8-5, while the Pirates doubled up on Tanapag, 8-4.
Action in the 2005 World Organized Rocball High School League, Budweiser-Coca Cola 6th UFO Basketball League, Men’s and Women’s Island-Wide Slow-Pitch Softball leagues, and 2006 Inter-Government Basketball League also continued the past week.
